this is one of those “birth of rock” guitars that sounds every bit as great today. There are numerous legendary early rock albums with this guitar all over them, most famously early recordings by The Who, like the whole “Live at Leeds”. album… This baby captures that sound brilliantly! The sound of those p90 single coil pickups has bite like a Fender, but is never thin, always fat like a humbucker, a growing favorite pickup type with many famous artists.

1963 Gibson SG Special 00668
Sunday, August 30th, 2009
http://www.frettedamericana.com/details.php?id=668&counter=0
This lightweight SG Special weighs just 6.60 lbs. Solid mahogany body with pointed horns and a one-piece medium profile mahogany neck. Bound rosewood fretboard with 22 medium jumbo frets and inlaid pearl dot position markers. Two very hot P-90 pickups with outputs of 7.71k and 8.02k. Compensated “wrap-over” bar bridge/stud tailpiece and Gibson “Maestro” Vibrato tailpiece. The cherry finish on the top, neck, and sides has faded to more of a brownish color. There is a very small stress crack on the treble side of the neck joint, but this is a very old surface crack and does not appear to have moved. Later Epiphone hardshell case.

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009Introducing my Gibson SG Classic with a Mike Oldfield medley
Wednesday, August 19th, 2009
Mike Oldfied different tunes on my brand new Gibson SG Classic, a very good guitar indeed. Some songs are messed up, sorry.
The sound is “raw”, no effect, no pedal, no gear… Only the guitar with a Marshall Valvestate 8080 amplifier. The P-90 pickups are great.
I played along, recording with my webcam, and I choosed the best moments (I hope). The sound of the video isn’t very clear.

Ommadawn,
Tubular Bells,

Epiphone SG G-400 Custom Shop 1966 Reissue Review VS. Gibson SG Standard Marshall JCM2000 TSL602
Tuesday, August 11th, 2009
Honestly, they are both awesome guitars. The gibson has better electronics, neck binding, a bit better tuners, and a thicker neck profile. The Epiphone is extremely well constructed though. No sharp fret edges, top of the frets are level (rare on cheap guitars, and very desireable for those that want low action), and it feels awesome. I cant get over the finish either, I am SO glad that I got it. I got a smokin’ deal from Musicians Friend on it too. $350 (including tax and shipping) with a new Epiphone hardshell case. I actually talked the representative into giving me an additional 10% off as well, so it came out to $315! HAH! Amazing value.
I HIGHLY recommend this guitar to anyone that is in the market for an SG. You are going to have to set it up (i.e. lower the strings and set the intonation), but you will need to do this to any guitar that you get. I had to set my Gibson up the same way.
If you looking for the Angus young sound, the bridge pickup is a little darker sounding than the 498T on my Gibson SG Standard. You may want to upgrade to a hotter pickup. The epiphone pickups are not bad at all though, they are more vintage sounding.
I am upgrading the bridge pickup to an Angus Young Signature in a few days, but I am leaving the neck pickup alone for now. I’ll be changing the cover on the neck pickup to “nickel” in order to match the Angus though. It should sound awesome!
